Speaking Independent Tasks

Ø  Task 1

[Question]

Your university has allowed some students to open an on-campus café that would be run completely by students with no university involvement. Talk about at least one advantage and/or disadvantage of this program. Use details and examples in your response.

[Response]

There would definitely be some advantages and disadvantages if the university had a café that was run by students.

One obvious advantage is that it would give the students an opportunity to get some work experience. I know, for me, I learned a lot from my summer job. I had a part-time job at a car dealership washing the cars. It taught me a lot about life and I’m sure working at a café would teach students about life, too.

However, one disadvantage would be that the café might not have the best service or the best coffee. For example, I know that my friend likes to make coffees and lattes. They’re okay, but they’re not as good as the coffee I can get at Starbucks, made by professionals.

Ø  Task 2

[Question]

Some people believe that all college students should be required to take math courses. Others believe that only those students who will take math-related jobs after graduation should be required to take math courses. Which opinion do you support and why? Use details and examples in your response.

[Response]

I think college students should not be required to take math classes unless they plan to go into some sort of math-related job.

First off, a lot of jobs don’t need math anymore, especially now that we have smartphones and calculators. For example, my dad works as a reporter for a newspaper, and he really never needs to use math. So I think that it’s not necessary unless you’re going into a math-related job.

On top of that, everyone takes math classes in high school. I think, I had a pretty standard high school curriculum, and I learned about geometry and calculus and all kinds of different math. That’s probably already more than enough than I’ll need for life.

Writing Independent Task

[Question]

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

Parents should limit the time children under 13 spend on electronic devices, like computers and smartphones, except when they’re used for schoolwork.

[Response]

It seems impossible to get by in our modern world without the use of our electronic devices. We need our smartphones and computers to do everything from finishing our homework to ordering dinner. That being said, it’s easy for people—especially children—to overuse these devices. Therefore, I believe that parents should put a limit on how much time their children spend using their high-tech gadgets.

First off, people can easily become addicted to these devices if they spend too much time on them when they’re young. There are a lot of people around my age who feel like it’s impossible to be away from their phones for even just a few minutes. In fact, I listened to a lecture last month that said a lot of people’s brains are actually changing because they spend too much time on their computers and phones. The speaker said that there’s a part of the brain which is used for spoken language, and that this part of the brain is shrinking in a lot of device-addicts. Kids may be mad when their parents restrict their computer time, but they’ll be thankful for it when they grow up.

On top of that, parents shouldn’t shy away from limiting what their children can and can’t do. Putting limits on their children is actually one of the most important things parents do; parents limit how much sugar their kids eat, how much time they spend playing with friends, and so on. My parents, like many other parents, made sure I ate healthy when I was young. My mother limited how much candy I ate and told me to eat vegetables. I didn’t enjoy it at the time, but now I’m happy for my healthy habits. The same is true for spending time on electronic devices. It’s not just a good idea for parents to limit how much time their kids spend glued to their phones; it’s actually a parent’s responsibility to do so.

That all being said, I think it’s also important to note that parents shouldn’t put harsh limits on how much their children use their gadgets. Parents should make sure that their kids aren’t spending all day glued to the screen, but at the same time they need to be aware that technology skills will be important to everyone’s education and career. For example, a lot of kids are good at typing because they enjoy playing computer games or chatting online with their friends. Parents should use time limits, but there’s no easy answer for how long those time limits should be. Instead, they need to know their own child and work to use limits that help their child find balance.

In short, it’s important that kids know how to use technology, but parents need to teach their children to use it responsibly. When they grow up, kids will be thankful for those healthy habits their parents helped them develop.

1. That being said, it’s easy for people—especially children—to overuse these devices.

2. First off, people can easily become addicted to these devices if they spend too much time on them when they’re young.

句子的主句是“people can easily become addicted to these device”,从句是以“if”为开头的条件状语从句,此外条件状语从句中还包括了一句“when”开头的时间状语从句。

3.  The speaker said that there’s a part of the brain which is used for spoken language, and that this part of the brain is shrinking in a lot of device-addicts.

这句句子的主语是“the speaker”,谓语“said”,接下去是两句并列的宾语从句“that”和“and that”。

Ø  In fact, I listened to a lecture last month that said a lot of people’s brains are actually changing because they spend too much time on their computers and phones.

Ø  That all being said, I think it’s also important to note that parents shouldn’t put harsh limits on how much their children use their gadgets.
